Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a suitably experienced and innovative Radiographer to join our multi-professional team, with a reputation for achieving clinical excellence. The successful candidate will participate in a rota throughout the areas including General Plain Film X-ray, Theatres and Dexa. 

You will join a dedicated and enthusiastic multidisciplinary team and have responsibility for the timely, efficient and cost effective front line management of the area you are allocated to. You will be directly responsible to the Band 7 Modality Lead Radiographer of the area you are working in. We encourage enthusiastic and motivated people, who wish to develop their team leadership qualities to apply.

The successful candiadate will undertake Dexa training and in time complete the Royal Osteoporosis Society Dexa course for national accreditation. 

The Hospital of St Cross is a small hospital set in Rugby. The hospital is an elective and rehabilitation site with 110 beds and six operating theatres, There are future plans to open an elective theatre hub supporting an additional 4 theatres. 

There is an Urgent Treatment Centre on site.

The Hospital of St Cross was rated 'Good' following the most recent Care Quality Commission inspection in 2025.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

Perform full range of imaging examinations consistently to a high standard ensuring compliance with imaging protocols. 

Organise and manage the day‑to‑day workflow within the X‑ray department, ensuring efficient patient throughput.

Liaise effectively with Radiographers, clinicians, nursing staff, porters and administrative teams to maintain smooth departmental operations.

Provide senior support in the absence of the Lead Radiographer, contributing to decision‑making and problem‑solving.

Supervise and support junior Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and Student Radiographers, helping with training, mentoring and skill development.

Carry out daily equipment checks, report faults promptly and contribute to safe operational practices.

Adhere to infection‑control procedures and contribute to maintaining a clean and safe clinical environment

Work autonomously as required during out‑of‑hours, weekend and public holiday shifts, supporting emergency and urgent care services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To perform imaging, in line with governmental and departmental protocols, working both alone and within radiology and multidisciplinary teams.
  • To check patient identification and documentation, and ensure the appropriate radiographic examinations are carried out in accordance with departmental protocols and clinical requests, especially implementing departmental safety protocols.
  • To evaluate scanned images taken for diagnostic quality, and alert clinicians of any abnormality when appropriate. 
  • Ensure patient safety, comfort and dignity throughout all imaging procedures.
  • Vet plain film imaging requests to ensure clinical appropriateness and avoid delays to patient pathways.
  • To participate in the departmental Quality Assurance programme to ensure the efficient operation of the highly technical equipment, and to ensure compliance with best practice especially with reference to minimising radiation exposures within X-ray and Dexa.
  • To be familiar with, understand and apply the principles of Radiation Safety, both nationally and locally regulated or protocol led. 
  • To give theoretical instruction, practical guidance, and supervision to less experienced staff, Student Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and trainees.
  • To assist with the practical experience of newly inducted staff.
  • To participate in imaging risk management and quality/audit programme and to undertake duties commensurate towards achievement of ISAS accreditation.
  • Report all incidents, to include all radiation and other incidents in accordance with the Trust DATIX procedures and local operating policies and procedures.
  • To participate in the full shift system including nights, weekends, and Bank Holidays in line with the departmental agreement, to support full service delivery.
