Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic person to join our Portering team as an Operating Department Orderly, supporting the provision of theatre services.  The post holder will be expected to cover between both Main Theatre and Day Surgery Unit.

The post holder will work with multi-disciplinary teams within Main Theatres and Day Surgery Unit, to maintain a safe environment for the patient and staff. You will be expected demonstrate a basic understanding of computerised software such as Microsoft word and excel. 

The candidate should be able work in a calm, logical and methodical way and be able to multi-task. They should also demonstrate an adaptable, flexible approach to work both within a team as well as being able to use their own initiative.

The post holder should ensure that they are familiar with the all Trust policies and procedures with special regards to Confidentiality, Health and Safety at Work and Fire.

On the job training for the post will be provided.

The post holder will be expected to work variable shift patterns, based on the departmental and operational needs. As well as cross cover into our radiology department . The post is for 37.5 hours per week, Although primarily Monday to Friday this will include rotational weekends The service we provide is currently between 8am and 8pm this comes in various shift patterns. 

Main duties of the job

To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team supporting the provision of an operating theatre service which includes Main Theatre and Day Surgery Unit, cooperating with theatre, ward and medical staff to maintain a safe environment for the patient and staff.

The post holder should ensure that they are familiar with all Trust policies and procedures with special regards to Confidentiality, Health and Safety at Work and Fire.

The post holder will have the opportunity to cover within Radiology, during shortfalls, sickness and annual leave

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Patient Handling

Moving patients between beds and trolleys as required Assisting in positioning of patients in preparation for surgery.

Transporting patients internal and external to the department

Maintaining a high standard of patient trolley cleanliness

Demonstrate a professional and polite manner when transferring patients General Duties

Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness within the department.

Ensure that the department is kept tidy at all times especially corridors. Assist in maintaining table attachments, keeping them clean and tidy Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of all equipment.

Assist in the movement of used instruments, linen and clinical/domestic waste to collection points

Provide general messenger duties as required

Support Theatre staff with the collection and management of specimens as required

To demonstrate competence in collecting blood products from blood bank in a timely manner. Able to complete relevant documentation.

Seek advice/support from supervisor or other senior members of staff in situations that are unfamiliar

Stock Control

Assist with maintenance of stock levels within the department by completion of stock check forms and placing of internal orders and by ensuring that the goods are checked in and put away in the required location.

Change and replenish medical gas cylinders as required.

Assist and support with the collection and recording of good received ensuring that trust policies are followed.

Communications and Interpersonal Relationships

Welcome patients, patients’ relatives and visitors to the clinical area, providing assistance, support and information where required. Being aware of barriers to effective communication.

To answer the telephone when necessary in a polite, courteous manner and pass on enquiries to the Registered Practitioner.

Communicate effectively within the Multi-disciplinary team and other departments to ensure that patient care is well planned and coordinated.

Report incidents, accidents and complaints as per Trust Policy and to the senior Practitioner on duty.

Use the Hospital information support system and other computer systems as required by the department.

Team Working

Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe keeping of patient’s property in accordance with Trust policy.

Promote a professional, welcoming and uncluttered environment; keep all storage areas safe, clean and tidy.

To share responsibility in the care and maintenance of all equipment in the clinical area including all equipment cleaning.

Ensure all waste and soiled linen is disposed of in line with Trust policy.

Participate in audit under the direction of the Registered Practitioner

Ensure deliveries are stored correctly and stock maintained to the required level.

Support the housekeeper with general housekeeping duties, reporting as necessary essential cleaning needs.

Education, Training and Personal Development

To ensure attendance at mandatory training sessions, i.e. infection control, resuscitation and manual handling training.

To complete the Trust’s and department induction programme.

To participate in the Trust Appraisal process

To undertake training as necessary for the development of the post.

Qualifications
