Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor to join our existing clinical team in the Neurology Department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH), Brighton.

 

The neurology team includes 17 consultant neurologists employed across the Trust, with 12 based at the RSCH site. We have close links with the neurophysiologists, neurosurgeons and stroke physicians who also work on site.

 

As well as gaining experience in varied aspects of neurological care, the post holder will have the opportunity to develop an expertise in managing Myasthenia Gravis and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). They will be working alongside two consultant neurologists and a neuropharmacist who run the Myasthenia service and alongside a team of specialist nurses and neurology consultants who see the MS patients. In addition, the post holder is to provide clinical support for our PIU and will be expected to be competent in performing lumbar puncture. Assistance with X-ray guided LP alongside a consultant neuroradiologist at the Princess Royal Hospital is also an expectation of the post.

 

There will also be the opportunity for the post holder to develop a clinic for female patients experiencing pregnancy who also have defined neurological conditions, in particular multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis. 

 

Main duties of the job

The role of the clinical fellow will reflect their level of experience but will involve the following: 

  • Completion of assessment of patients on the Neurology Day Case Unit 
  • Medical supervision of patients undergoing infusions 
  • Undertaking diagnostic and therapeutic lumbar punctures 
  • Participating in daily neurology ward rounds 
  • Liaising with nursing colleagues and therapists 
  • Assessing newly admitted patients 
  • Carrying out daily ward duties relating to in-patient medical management 
  • Attending weekly Neuroradiology MDM 
  • Attending Thursday afternoon 3pm neurology academic teaching 

Attending additional neurophysiology and ward based neurology teaching

Experience & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Basic medical degree
  • • Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification
  • • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • • Four years post-graduation, with two years in the relevant specialty.
