Job overview

We are looking to recruit 1 full time or 2 LTFT (0.7 WTE) Trust Doctors to join our Paediatrics team at St Richard's Hospital, as soon as possible for 6 months.

This is a full-time/ part-time role including participation in a full shift rota system.


The successful candidate will work alongside other team members to provide a full shift rota at middle grade level which will involve acute paediatrics and neonates. Candidates must have completed foundation training (or equivalent) and have at least 2 further years of Paediatric experience ideally including 6 months in a tertiary neonatal unit. Full MRCPCH should be held or be close to being held.


Candidates must have full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.


Candidates will be expected to work together as a team within the Women and Children's Group.

Main duties of the job

This post holder essentially covers Acute Paediatric unit and Neonatal unit at a Middle grade level. The post holder is responsible for the following:


  • Managing children admitted to the Paediatric ward under supervision of a Consultant
  • Seeing patients referred to the Paediatric Assessment unit and providing support and advice to A &E doctors, General Practitioners
  • Attending resuscitation calls in A&E
  • Supervising and supporting Tier 1 doctors in patient care in children's ward and assessment unit 
  • Managing babies on the Neonatal unit under supervision of consultant
  • Supervision and supporting Tier 1 doctors in patient care for babies on the neonatal unit and maternity unit
  • Attending high risk deliveries on the maternity unit
  • Support and teaching of junior medical, nursing staff and medical students
  • To engage in Continuing Professional Development and Audit as appropriate
  • To engage with the Trusts appraisal and revalidation process so far as is consistent with the proper discharge of duties the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.

The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

Experience/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Basic medical degree
  • • Success in MRCPCH Part I or appropriate specialist qualification
  • • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • • Advanced Life Support and Neonatal Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • • Success at MRCPH Part II

Clinical Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement. Potential to develop excellent diagnostic skills
  • • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice.
  • • Achievement of competences in general paediatrics and neonatology outlined in the Paediatric Curriculum for Level 2 training by the time of application
  • • Successful completion of APLS and NLS or equivalent
  • • Successful completion of Safeguarding children: Recognition & response in Child Protection or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • • Shows aptitude for practical skills, e.g. hand-eye co-ordination, dexterity
  • • Previous tier 2 level NHS experience in Paediatrics.
