Job overview

We are looking for a Therapy Assistant to join the North Lancashire Community Therapy Team, working across the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and the community sites at Lancaster.  This is as part of a newly integrated Community Therapy Team supporting hospital discharges and rehabilitation in the community. 

The post holder, will be working alongside Therapy colleagues within the geographical area.

Full UK driving licence, or equivalent qualification is essential.

The service works closely with the Integrated Care Communities, local GP's, Adult Social Care, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and hospital discharge teams. The service supports people with a wide variety of conditions including elderly care, frailty and falls, orthopaedics and long-term condition management.

Main duties of the job

Assessment will be within the patient’s home at point of discharge from hospital and will support with on-going rehabilitation needs in the community setting.

The Therapy Team operate over a 7 day service.

You will have previous experience within a health and social care setting eg: acute inpatient, admission avoidance or community-based rehabilitation services.

The ability to travel to a variety of venues throughout the community to support a delegated caseload within an identified locality.

In addition to a comprehensive induction package we offer Team support, staff supervision and in-service training opportunities

 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care or Equivalent level training or relevant experience as a OT assistance sufficient to meet the competencies of a CSW/OTB3
  • Basic numeracy and literacy (e.g. GCSE level)
  • Full UK driving licence, or equivalent qualification

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate with patients with impaired communication abilities.
  • Able to demonstrate care, compassion, courage and commitment.
  • Able to demonstrate empathy, motivate and persuade patients with impaired cognitive abilities or physical senses.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to comply with the Trust’s policies.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to be flexible
  • Ability to meet the physical/ psychological requirements of the post.
  • Ability to perform moderate to intense physical effort for short periods throughout the working day.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience as a assistant in health or social care sufficient to meet the competencies of a Community Therapy Assistant
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience as a community therapy assistant or similar.
  • Experience in relevant field eg: care of the elderly, orthopaedics, neuro-rehab or gymnasium
