Job overview

Based in Haywards Heath, Brighton, Chichester or Worthing, we are looking for a Clinical Knowledge Specialist to work with University Hospitals Sussex staff of all grades and professions to promote and support evidence-based decision-making.

You will work as a member of selected UHSussex teams to provide highly specific, quality-filtered evidence to both teams and individuals in response to information needs. This will involve working alongside managerial and clinical staff in their place of work, including attending multi-disciplinary meetings, journal clubs and the clinical environment where appropriate.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will use expert knowledge of online searching to provide comprehensive evidence searches. They will provide evidence updates and other alerting services for staff, and will teach and train groups and individuals in evidence-based information skills, including critical appraisal skills.

You will promote the service, liaise with key members of the teams, evaluate the service, and make recommendations for the future.

We are looking for someone who will:

Provide professional enquiry and evidence search services to K&L

members, supporting them to undertake study, service improvement, audit

and research.

Identify the training needs of the multi-disciplinary teams covered by the service.

Provide teaching and training to individuals and groups of staff on effective use of information services,

critical appraisal of research and other information skills, using face-to-face delivery, remote teaching

tools and blended learning where appropriate. 

Work alongside multi-professional teams in their environment, e.g. attending meetings, journal clubs,

ward rounds (where appropriate), and other events, to establish the best methods of supporting their

information needs.

Develop expert knowledge in specialist areas in order to understand and fulfil the needs of the assigned

teams and departments. 

Proactively offer evidence reports, information skills teaching, information resources, and evidence

updates as needed, generating additional work for Knowledge and Libraries. 

Assist in running of Knowledge and Libraries by supporting and influencing service developments and

planning. 

Person specification

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in library and information science.
  • Experience in a health or academic library / information unit.
  • Awareness of current trends in health care and NHS policies.
  • Understanding of the concepts of clinical governance and evidence-based health care.
  • Experience of training users to search online information resources, face-to-face and online.
  • Experience of planning and implementing service development.
  • Excellent written skills.
  • Experience with MS Products
  • Thorough understanding of knowledge-based information services, e-learning and evidence-based research
  • Ability to produce and analyse statistics on service usage and feedback.
Desirable criteria
  • Possessing or working towards professional registration.
  • Teaching qualification
  • Knowledge of the research process
  • Experience in creating or maintaining databases
  • Experience with CSS and other web design tools
