Cellular Pathology Consultant

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is now one of the largest trusts in the country, serving a population of 1.2 million people. Our newly formed Trust, comprising acute hospital sites at Broomfield in Chelmsford, Basildon and Southend,  is determined to provide the best health services for its local population. We are a well-led, high-performing and innovative organisation working in the best interests of the people we serve.

With a workforce of approximately 15,000 staff, we can now do more and go further in delivering health services to our local communities.

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

Patients will experience improved care as well as fewer delays and cancellations.  We are able to provide more once-in-a-lifetime specialist care region-wide. With our new trust size will come more opportunities for development, research, networking and innovation.

We  aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.

We will deliver safe and high-quality services and be an employer of choice for our workforce.

We are ‘one team, working together’.

This is an exciting time to join us. The three NHS trusts that currently run Broomfield, Southend and Basildon hospitals have recently merged to become a new single NHS organisation, known as Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

All three hospitals will continue to provide the services our patients use the most. These include outpatient appointments, children’s services and day-case surgery.  All three hospitals will continue to provide 24/7 A&E and maternity services.

By working as one team we will provide the same high standard of care and services for all of our 1.2m local residents. Using the same equipment, processes and IT systems means services will run more smoothly.  Single leadership, standards and new structures will speed up decision making.  Combined corporate services will reduce duplication and cut running costs. This means more money for front-line services and faster improvements.

Attracting new talent is key to our future and the scale of our organisation will give far  more career, training and development opportunities for all our staff.

Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a Teaching Hospital linked to the London University, and is the Cancer Centre for South Essex, serving a population of 338,800. We currently employ about 4,500 staff with 190 Consultant staff.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a small but friendly and supportive team of Histopathologists here at Southend Hospital.

The Southend Histopathology Department is a dynamic, friendly and forward thinking department, made up of a team of 6 Consultants, however, as part of the Southend, Basildon and Mid Essex Pathology partnership we work closely with an additional 20 Consultants sharing knowledge and expertise in all areas of Histopathology.

As a department we pride ourselves on our personal and flexible approach, considering each staff member individually, and building our services to compliment both the staff and patients.

Our department runs on the basis is funded for 6 rather than 7 consultants  currently,  we now have 4 substantive consultants and 2 locum Consultants and are seeking to replace the locums with substantives.

The workload is extremely varied but as the designated cancer centre for the three hospitals this includes a large amount of interesting complex cancer cases.

We are currently specifically looking to appoint a fixed term locum consultant who is on the CESR pathway having obtained full FRCPath.

At Southend we offer support and supervision in gaining skills as a consultant working in the UK, in particular around independent reporting. We would undertake to help in getting attachments in the specialist fields required for CESR, and have a busy mortuary where we can provide post mortem experience or demonstrations.

The Trust is open to a variety of flexible working arrangements as long as the service needs of the department are met. It is also envisaged that reporting on Digital Pathology will be introduced as an option within the next 2 years.

The department offers newly decorated individual offices , up to date microscopes , individual networked computers with access to the internet/Wi-Fi, secretarial support or voice recognition software . Digital dictation is also available.

The current workload is in the order of 21,000 requests per annum, with a wide and interesting range of biopsy material. There is also a well-developed immunohistochemistry service to support the diagnostic process, which is responsive to increasing demands from the Clinical Oncologists.

The Trust is located close to the sea with many areas of outstanding natural beauty and excellent links into London via both Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street.

Southend Airport provides easy access to a variety of both warm and cool destinations such as Barcelona, Berlin, Corfu, Venice, Amsterdam, Dublin, Dubrovnik, Ibiza, Menorca, Milan and many more.
