Job overview
Applicants are invited for the post of a Consultant Plastic Surgeon (with interest in Head and Neck Surgery). This is a full-time permanent post.
This post will play an active role in the delivery of the Plastic Surgery in head and neck reconstructions microsurgical reconstruction, to work with our ENT / Head and Neck Surgeons, Neurosurgeons and Oculoplastic surgical colleagues.
You will be providing direct input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and participate in the delivery of General Plastic Surgery, including skin cancer.
You will be promoting high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
Main duties of the job
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to improve Plastics Surgery and Burns services within Lancashire and South Cumbria. This will be in line with the 18-week referral to treatment and national cancer targets and to have a commitment to working a 7-day working week, with this being potentially required.
To provide direct input to patients; contribute to relevant multi-disciplinary teams (Head and Neck MDT) and participate in the delivery of skin cancer, burns and hand trauma as part of general Plastic Surgery workload.
Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
You will receive the full support of the Trust and the Directorate to develop specialist areas of interest in line with Directorate business plans and the development of services generally within the Trust.
There are plans to develop Facial Palsy MDT with involvement from similar specialty colleagues as part of offering Facial palsy reconstruction procedures.
It is the expectation that every member of the consultant body will undertake teaching of undergraduate medical students, other learners and trainees alongside providing clinical care during DCC activities.

The Plastic Surgery and Burns Facility in Preston provides a comprehensive service for the whole of Lancashire and South Cumbria covering a population of 1.7 million.

- Royal Lancaster Infirmary
- Accrington Victoria Hospital
The adult Plastic Surgery and Burns ward has 22 beds and day case area. There are allocated day case beds for children on the paediatric unit. The adult ward also provides a service for local anaesthetic day case patients. Surgery is conducted in the main theatres across Chorley Hospital and Royal Preston Hospital.
Central Lancashire is an attractive and historic area to live and has many local facilities. Major sporting venues are within reach. The cities of Manchester and Liverpool are within easy reach and the city of Preston itself is vibrant and developing. There are direct and rapid rail links from Preston to London and Glasgow. Recreational facilities are many and varied, with the Lake District, Ribble Valley, Yorkshire Dales, rural Fylde and the Fylde Coast nearby.

Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- FRCS or overseas equivalent.
- Entry on the Specialist Register (or entry expected within 6 months).
Desirable criteria
- FRCS (Plastic Surgery)

Essential criteria
- Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/ Good Medical Practice
Personal
Essential criteria
- Works well within a multidisciplinary environment.
- Good organisation skills (with examples).
- Proven effective communication skills.
- Resident within 30 minutes travel time to Chorley/Preston.
Desirable criteria
- Car owner/driver

- Evidence of interest in personal development e.g. through research and/or publications

Experience and Skills

- Ability to offer opinion on and take responsibility for elective and emergency problems in Plastic Surgery, including hand trauma and burns.
- Wide range of clinical experience in specialty
- Proficiency in complex Microsurgical Reconstructions.
Desirable criteria
- Fellowship in Head and Neck reconstructions.
- Interest / Experience in Facial Palsy reconstructions
- Interest / experience in micro lymphatic reconstructions
