Job overview

This role focuses on enhancing palliative and end-of-life care education and training for healthcare staff at Kingston Hospital. It involves developing evidence-based educational programs and fostering a progressive learning environment for nursing and care staff, with a particular emphasis on supporting less experienced palliative care nurses. The role also includes leading education initiatives on the care of dying patients and advancing the use of Advance Care Planning (ACP) within the Trust. This involves collaborating with clinical teams to identify patients in their last months of life, facilitating discussions on patient and family preferences, and ensuring these are effectively documented and communicated. Additionally, the role requires active participation in project management and service development using quality improvement methodologies.

 

Main duties of the job

Clinical Excellence  

       Provides clinical expertise and specialist advice on complex symptom management.

       Supports the managing teams in caring for inpatients with complex psychological, social, spiritual and ethical issues.

       Assesses patient and carer information needs and provides relevant information to meet those needs.

       Acts as patient advocate where necessary.

Provides clinical expertise, specialist advice and support across service boundaries including the medical, allied health professional and other members of the multidisciplinary teams involved in caring for patients with palliative care needs.

        Practices safe prescribing of medicines where appropriate as per agreed scope of practice

Practice, and acts in accordance with the hospital Non-medical prescribing policy.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Relevant professional qualification and registration/Registered General Nurse
  • Appropriate first level degree
  • Master’s level education in palliative care or similar, or willing to undertake
Desirable criteria
  • Palliative care qualification
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Teaching qualification
  • Advanced Communication Skills Training or equivalent
  • ound knowledge of palliative care drug therapies and possess Non-medical prescribing qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in palliative and end-of-life care
  • Experience of teaching and developing training material
  • Leadership and management experience, including project management and quality improvement
  • Experience in participating in and facilitating reflective practice
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in facilitating clinical supervision

Skills/abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work on own initiative, independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent time management & organizational skills

Knowledge
