Consultant In Gastroenterology

YM72

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers.

The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

Barts Health supports the Pregnancy Loss Pledge and commits to supporting their staff through the distress of miscarriage.

Job overview

Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a substantive Consultant Gastroenterologist.  This is a 10 PA split-site role, to join our team, primarily based at Newham Hospital, with endoscopy sessions delivered at The Royal London.

The post has a strong focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and inpatient gastroenterology at Newham, alongside advanced lower GI endoscopy at The Royal London, including Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD).

At Newham, the successful candidate will contribute to inpatient care as part of the Gastroenterologist of the Week model, working alongside a well-established and collaborative team of consultants to support both inpatient and outpatient IBD services. While there is no commitment to the general internal medicine (GIM) on-call rota, participation in the out-of-hours GI bleed rota is required.

The provisional interview date for this post, is the 23rd of June.

This post is pending Royal college approval

Main duties of the job

At The Royal London, the postholder will be a key member of the lower GI endoscopy team, delivering endoscopy lists—including advanced procedures—and actively participating in relevant MDTs.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to clinical governance, audit, and departmental management, and to support the ongoing development and improvement of endoscopy and gastroenterology pathways.

We are looking for a dynamic, motivated, and forward-thinking Consultant to join our friendly, innovative, and high-performing team. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with a specialist interest in IBD and advanced lower GI endoscopy.
