Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within our West Middlesex Early Pregnancy and Emergency Gynaecology Unit for a highly experienced specialist advanced practitioner (nurse or midwife), with expert knowledge and skills in the field of early pregnancy and emergency gynaecology.
We are looking for a caring, enthusiastic, committed clinician who is passionate about developing a patient centred service, has excellent clinical knowledge and leadership skills. The post holder will work closely with the multidisciplinary team across gynaecology, fertility and maternity services on both our Trust sites
The successful candidate will work independently and unsupervised as an expert Advanced Practitioner in performing diagnostic ultrasound for women with early pregnancy complications or requiring emergency gynaecology assessment; demonstrating advanced levels of clinical judgment, discretion and clinical decision making.
The post also provides opportunity for personal development within the speciality and to develop operational skills.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
Be responsible for leading and co-ordinating the Early Pregnancy & Emergency Gynaecology Unit with a focus on providing high quality clinical care to pregnant and non-pregnant women who experience complications in early pregnancy or with acute gynaecological presentations
Be a highly experienced specialist advanced practitioner, with expert knowledge and skills in the field of early pregnancy and emergency gynaecology, undertaking holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care in accordance with National Guidance; and able to provide comprehensive consultation and advice for patients.
The role includes leading sonography training for nurses, providing clinical teaching and education to other colleagues (medical/nursing) to enhance clinical practice and improve patient care.
Take full responsibility for the effective running of the EPAGU service and line management of nursing staff within the unit. They are recognised as a key member of the senior nursing management team.
Work closely with the Lead Nurse for Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy, the Gynaecology Outpatient Nurse Managers, and the Lead Nurse in the Elizabeth Suite, sharing responsibility for the standards and evaluation of training and supervision of nursing staff within the service.
Ensure women and their partners are offered appropriate information, support and counselling.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will:
- Work within an agreed job plan to meet service needs (reviewed annually). A minimum of 60% of the time will be working clinically. This could include weekends. The remaining 40% of the time will be dedicated to the required managerial activities, promoting education, participation in direct care, leading and monitoring the patient safety agenda, participation in audit to improve care delivery and patient outcomes.
- Have a medical Ultrasound PGCert or Diploma in Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy with evidence of up-to-date practice and CPD.
3. Perform transvaginal and abdominal ultrasound scans, interpret results and initiate appropriate interventions for women with suspected early pregnancy complications or emergency gynaecology disorders.
4. Responsible and accountable for the management of a patient caseload within the specialty
5. Perform a comprehensive problem focused health history and physical examination, and be able to analyse and interpret history, presenting symptoms, physical findings and diagnostic information to develop differential diagnosis within the specialist area.
6. Manage early pregnancy complications and emergency gynaecology disorders according to hospital protocols and to refer on to medical staff where appropriate.
7. Ensure patients are investigated appropriately, interpret results and communicate results to patient, carer and GP/referrer.
8. Manage the investigation and close follow up of women with a pregnancy of unknown location at ultrasound scan, in conjunction with the Lead Consultant, according to local protocols
9. Manage the investigation and close follow up of women with an expectantly managed ectopic pregnancy or missed miscarriage, in conjunction with the Lead Consultant, according to local protocol
10. Deal with complex situations, including complaints, arising from patients or relatives and defuse potentially volatile situations using negotiation and persuasive skills.

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse / Midwife
- Specialist Nursing Qualification
- Relevant Degree or equivalent experience in nurse/midwifery or health related field
- Relevant masters level or equivalent experience
- Recognized teaching qualification
- Counselling training/ qualification
- Medical Ultrasound PGCert or Diploma
Desirable criteria
- Non-Medical Prescribing qualification
Experience

- Extensive experience in woman’s health Band 7
- Extensive experience in early pregnancy assessment to include miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy care
- Acute gynaecology experience
