Applications are invited for a Consultant in Paediatric/Neonatal Cardiothoracic Surgery to complete a team of four consultant Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeons covering the Cardiothoracic Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH).
This post will be primarily responsible for Paediatric cardiac surgery, with main focus on neonatal and complex infant surgery but will also play a role in heart and lung transplantation and provide surgical support to the ECMO programme, with potential input into Grown-up Congenital Heart Disease Surgery.
The post, that will commence as soon as possible and is open to applicants with substantial experience in congenital/ Paediatric and neonatal cardiothoracic surgery, and the successful applicant will be expected to be able to perform a wide range of Paediatric cardiothoracic surgery, with special focus on neonatal and complex infant surgery, including heart and lung transplantation.
The Cardiothoracic Unit at GOSH is the largest Cardiothoracic Paediatric (ages 0-16 years) Unit in the UK and has a worldwide reputation. It cares for patients with all types of congenital heart and lung defects, and has large transplant and ECMO services. It also houses the largest Paediatric thoracic practice in the UK and the only tracheal service.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will be administratively and professionally responsible to Mr Martin Kostolny – Clinical lead for Cardiothoracic Surgery. The appointee will also be expected to participate fully with the cardiac program. The appointee will be expected to work with the team in multi-disciplinary clinical meetings, audit and clinical governance and to ensure excellent communication with patients, their families and other professionals.
Specific Clinical Duties
Cardiothoracic surgery is a consultant-led service at GOSH and the appointee will be expected to sustain that philosophy, providing appropriate support for colleagues and juniors.
The appointee will operate a minimum of 2 half-day sessions per week. Consultants are expected to and frequently do operate together on complex or unusual cases, which form a considerable proportion of our work, This too increases the operating exposure of the successful appointee. The consultant surgeon will provide internal cover for colleagues on leave, which increases their annual operating experience.
