Job overview
The Endoscopy Service at Imperial Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a highly experienced, talented and passionate Nurse Endoscopist to join our expanding team. We are a high performing service, which continues to expand following the refurbishment and expansion of our site at Charing Cross Hospital where we plan to open at full capacity of 4 rooms.
As our new Nurse Endoscopist, you will independently undertake diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy on sedated and non-sedated patients and will work with the MDT to ensure the development, management and delivery of a high-quality endoscopy service.
You will also be an enthusiastic and inspirational nurse with a passion for holistic patient care. You will be working cross-site at St Mary's, Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals, supported by the Lead Nurse Endoscopist and Clinical Lead.
You will be a skilled communicator with a passion for patient care, education and staff development. You will place a high priority on maintaining a supportive and caring environment for patients and staff and on developing the highest standards of evidence-based practice and achieving key quality metrics.
The post-holder will be expected to undertake 5 service lists a week with 1 rotational backfill list. You will also be expected to support the service with clinical audits in line with JAG recommendation.
Main duties of the job
- Be a JAG accredited endoscopist working autonomously in performing diagnostic and therapeutic lower GI endoscopy procedures on sedated and non-sedated patients.
- Undertake 5 lower GI endoscopy lists per week and additionally when required, provide backfill for one other.
- Work collaboratively with the clinical, administrative and management team to provide an efficient and effective service.
- Undertake clinical validation of endoscopy referrals as required
- Provide cover as required and appropriate for endoscopy lists
- Participate in the training of junior doctors and other nurse endoscopists as appropriate
- Support with the management of surveillance endoscopy for upper and lower GI procedures (manage database)
- Act as a strong advocate for excellent patient care
- Responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, management & clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with CPD requirements and maintain a professional profile
- Be accountable for and ensure own competence in practice
- Attend educational activities on the unit and participate and be part of the faculty on endoscopy courses delivered within the department
- Work with the clinical practice facilitator and contribute to the development of in-house education and training programmes.
- Ensure JAG and GRS key performance indicators are met
- Work within the agreed Trust policies and procedures and to work within the NMC Professional Code of Conduct.

Education/ qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (level 1)
- Post registration qualification in specialty
- Educated to postgraduate diploma/degree level or equivalent experience
- Non-medical prescribing
- Knowledge of disease and care related to symptom management and treatments
- Knowledge of both endoscopy Global Rating Score (GRS) and JAG accreditation standards
Desirable criteria
- Recognised teaching/assessing qualification
- Management certificate or equivalent experience
- Train the trainers in endoscopy
Experience
Essential criteria
- Up to date knowledge and experience in lower GI endoscopy
- Knowledge and experience of principles of administration of IV sedation and their reversal agents
- Clinical leadership at a senior level in an acute setting including people, financial and change management
- Experience of running nurse-led clinics
- Experience of undertaking audits of research, as necessary e.g. audits of clinical incidents
- Experience of involvement in the development and reviewing of appropriate guidelines, protocols and pathways
- Experience of managing investigations and resolving complaints
- Experience in quality assurance projects
- Experience of providing health advice
- Experience of deputising in a senior role
