Job overview

We are currently seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Healthcare Support Workers (HCSW) to join us within our Surgical Care Group on the York site. We currently have vacancies on various wards within Surgery, including Upper and lower GI, Urology and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Acute Admissions, Vascular, and Head and Neck.

We welcome and encourage applicants who may already have experience in a healthcare setting or have transferable skills that can be employed to the position. We would like applicants to apply that would like to come and share our goal and vision for excellent care in Surgery.

Working as a HCSW you will be a vital part of our clinical teams. You will be expected to work alongside your colleagues to support the delivery of high standards of direct patient care to those accessing our services, in a kind and compassionate manner.

Within the Surgical Care Group, we pride ourselves in our patient-focused approach, ensuring that we provide care that is safe, effective, and individual for all our patients. The successful candidate will be dedicated, flexible, reliable, and willing to learn, and hold excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

A 4-week Healthcare Academy training programme will be delivered as part of your induction. Alongside this training our Clinical Educator team in Surgery offer a comprehensive induction and you will be supported through a probationary period which is tailored to your needs, and that supports your individual requirements.

Main duties of the job

As a Healthcare Support Worker at York Hospital, you will be part of a multi-professional team providing high standards of care to our patients. You will maintain and promote patient independence and dignity to ensure each patient receives a positive experience. As a Healthcare Support Worker, you will be expected to work a combination of shifts including nights, weekends, and Bank Holidays:

· Early – 07:00-15:00

· Late – 12:00 - 20:00

· Long days - 07:00 - 20:00

· Night – 19:30 - 07:30

You must be able to commit to our Full Time HCSW Academy for the first 4 weeks of your employment with our Trust. Please note our HCSW Academy takes place at our training site in Holgate, York. We are unable to provide travel options or reimburse travel costs for attendance at this.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Numeracy skills to Functional Skills Level 1 (GCSE Grade 2-3, D-F or equivalent).
  • Demonstrable effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic IT skills, able to use applications such as email on a computer or smart device (e.g. tablet)
