Job overview

Following a restructure in the department we are looking for experienced and confident Employee Relations Managers to join our People Directorate at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are pleased to be offering a number of fixed term opportunities for 12 to 18 months. 

This key role provides expert support and guidance on a wide range of employee relations matters, working in partnership with leaders, managers, staff-side representatives, and HR teams. You will play a central role in promoting fair and inclusive practices, embedding our Just Culture principles, and helping to deliver our people strategy.

The successful candidates will take a lead role in supporting complex employee relations casework, support organisational change programmes, and contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures that reflect best practice and employment law. 

 

 

Main duties of the job

As an Employee Relations Manager at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, you will play a pivotal role in promoting fair, inclusive, and consistent employee relations across the organisation. Working in a fast-paced and complex environment, you will provide expert advice and coaching to managers on a wide range of complex issues, including employment concerns, conduct matters, sickness absence,  MHPS (medical cases), and performance management.

You will be responsible for managing a varied and high-volume caseload of sensitive and often complex matters, ensuring timely and appropriate resolution in line with employment legislation and Trust policies. You will lead on supporting organisational change initiatives ensuring best practice is utilised at all times.

Working closely with the Deputy Head of Employee Relations you will manage a team of Employee Relations  Advisors,  ensuring consistency in provision of advice and guidance to key stakeholders on policies and processes and that case work is delivered in a timely manner, working to improve casework processes and delivery times in all we do.

You will deputise for the Deputy Head of Employee Relations Manager when required and be an excellent communicator, with the ability to quickly build strong working relationships at all levels.

Ultimately, you will help shape and embed a positive, values-led culture across NUH, ensuring fairness, compassion and accountability are at the heart of how we work.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Masters level / Level 7 Advanced CIPD HR qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience at a similar level
  • • Active membership of CIPD or equivalent
  • • Excellent level of English, written and verbal
  • • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • In-depth experience of Human Resource Management (HRM)
  • Developing, reviewing, consulting on and implementing organisation-wide HR policies and procedures
  • Advising and supporting senior managers in dealing with a range of complex operational and strategic HR matters encountered in a large, complex organisation, e.g. matters relating to sickness absence, disciplinary and capability
  • Use of HR Software packages and trackers, including report writing e.g. ESR or similar staff HR & payroll system, Recruitment systems, People Management systems and Casework Trackers.
  • Knowledge of key employment legislation – existing and prospective, and experienced in the use of organsational employment policies and procedures.
  • Current and emerging employment law issues / updates
  • • Managing multiple work strands, priorities and complex and large scale projects
  • Recent HR experience which encompasses a comprehensive and in-depth experience of - • Delivering a complex workload in a fast moving environment and often to challenging deadlines • Agenda for change job matching, evaluation and ratification • Supporting change management processes within a large complex organisation • Designing and delivering specialist HR Training • Working in a complex fast moving, multi-professional environment • Providing specialist HR advice to senior managers and multi-disciplinary teams • Working with workforce/ management information systems and finance to describe context and identify resulting workforce strategies • Knowledge and understanding of current proactive HR practices and national HR initiatives
Desirable criteria
  • Recent NHS HR experience
  • Experience within a large/complex and unionised environment
  • Experience of managing change programmes
  • Knowledge of the NHS and key issues facing all staff
  • Experience of using ESR
  • Good knowledge of Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions of Service
