Job overview
Are you an experienced Paediatric Critical Care Nurse seeking a new challenge? There is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated nurse to join our Paediatric Critical Care senior leadership team.
We are a 14 bedded Paediatric Critical Care Unit comprising of 8 Level 3 beds and 6 Level 2 beds. We care for children under a wide range of specialities and work closely alongside the Children’s Medical Emergency Transport (CoMET) service for the East Midlands region.
You must be an RSCN or RN Child, adult or LD qualified nurse with substantial experience of working in a Paediatric Critical Care environment as a Band 6 nurse. You must hold a recognised Critical Care qualification and Mentors and Assessors qualification. You must have a degree or be on a degree pathway.

The clinical role includes working clinically covering the full range of shifts, leading the clinical team and working with the wider PCCU MDT.
The role includes line manager responsibilities and deputising in the absence of the PCCU Matron.
1 WTE, part time hours considered. Minimum hours to be no less than 10 shifts per month = 28.45 hours.
Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as Senior Sister/Charge Nurse. They will be required to:
Be an effective leader and role model and regularly take charge of the Unit, ensuring that the standards and quality of care given to patients, together with the environment in which care is delivered, are maintained at a high standard.
Provide regular direct clinical care and utilise experience to support the implementation of both clinical and non‑clinical governance.
Support and lead a cohort of Band 6 and 5 nurses and members of the admin team, carrying out yearly appraisals and ensuring staff training is up to date.
The post holder is required to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Nottingham Children’s Hospital is set within the vibrant city of Nottingham known for its many historical sites. The Children’s Hospital is housed within the Queen’s Medical Centre campus and has 116 inpatient beds across 8 inpatient wards covering all specialities.
We are a major trauma centre, and the Children’s Critical Care Unit works closely with the Emergency Department in providing front line care for trauma patients. Nottingham Children's Hospital Critical Care provides an essential service for Neurology/Neurosurgical; Spinal/Orthopaedic; Oncology/Haematology; Respiratory; General Surgery and Rheumatology. The Hospital is also a provider of paediatric renal services for the region, which allows staff on the unit to be actively involved with kidney transplants and haemofiltration.

The post holder is required to work as a member of Paediatric Critical Care nursing team, they will be a member of a team of Band 7 nurses who take managerial, professional and clinical responsibility for the paediatric critical care nursing team. They will have 24 hours responsibility for the management and delivery of care within PCCU. They will deputise when requested for the PCCU Matron including undertaking responsibility for the management of Children’s Services when delegated by the Senior Nurse/Head Nurse.

Essential criteria
- Current level one NMC registration RSCN or RN (Adult, Child or Learning Disability Branch)
- Paediatric Critical Care Course
- Degree in health / nursing related Studies or on degree pathway
- Continuing professional development/ reflective profile
- Possession of a Mentoring Course
- APLS
- Completion of all local competency packages.
- Leo course or leadership course, or date set to attend
Desirable criteria
- Formal leadership and management training
- Use of clinical benchmarking to influence patient care (Essence of Nursing)
- Evidence of study at Masters level
- Research training/experience
- EPALS
- GIC instructor or equivalent
Experiance
Essential criteria
- • Minimum of 5 years post registration experience to include management/leadership experience
- • Clinically credible who is experienced in Paediatric Critical Care Nursing and able to utilise their clinical expertise and specialist knowledge to deliver high quality evidence based education and care of the critically ill baby, child or young person
- • Understanding of audit or research within the clinical area
- • Formal teaching of groups of staff
- • Understanding of risk management and clinical governance
