Job overview

The Bed Manager role is pivotal to enable patients to transfer from the Emergency Department and QMC and City Hospital in a timely manner to ensure that targets are met and patients receive the ongoing care they require and placing patients in the correct speciality areas.

 Working together with the medicine Bronze and senior management team to ensure patient flow is maintained.

We are looking for a person, who is organised, motivated, is able to work independently and is a lateral thinker. Has excellent communication skills and is passionate about ensuring patients access into medical beds at city hospital is as seamless as possible.

The bed management role involves working a combination of  Long days and Night shifts days working 7 days a week including bank holidays

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The bed management role involves working a combination of 12 hour days working 7 days a week including bank holidays

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to understand and adhere to working practices for providing a patient escort service
  • Ability to recongnise the emotional and physical needs of a patient who is anxious/apprehensive/aggressive
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in a customer/patient focused environment
  • Previous experience in a health care setting
  • Previous DISCO Experience
  • Previous experience as bed manager or similar role

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE or equivalent Maths and English achieved
  • Demonstrate Computer literacy & use of IT skills – e.g. e-mail, Word, Excel
Desirable criteria
  • Can competently use IT systems such as Nerve centre, word documents , excel

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to analyse and act on simple information on a daily basis, i.e. patient transfer requests in order to prioritise workload
  • Deals effectively with problems within well-defined procedures and guidelines
  • Has expereince of working under pressure as part of team
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of current issues related to the NHS (General and Localised)

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to manoeuvre people and equipment in line with Trust policy
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of moving and handling training
  • Ability to work in Theatre clinical areas as directed by a Registered Theatre/ Recovery Practitioner

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Understand and practices the principles of confidentiality
  • Recognises own level of competence and limitations and able to communicate these to appropriate staff
  • Demonstrates as empathetic approach to patients & their relatives
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstration of team working and ability to work in team
