Job overview

This Specialist Rehabilitation Occupational Therapist role offers the post hold the exciting opportunity to bring together practice across the broad spectrum of Occupational Therapy. Patients in Critical Care often present with complex multifactorial rehabilitation needs, allowing the post holder to utilise skills from hand therapy to cognitive treatments, positioning progression to ADL advancement.

The successful candidate will be part of a specialist multi-disciplinary team with a need to be collaborative to achieve OT therapeutic aims within a mixed treatment session approach. This rehabilitative role is about early intervention to maximise Patients long term function through to meaningful recovery, as such previous rehabilitation experience is essential and candidates without critical care experience are very welcome to apply.

Patients are admitted to Critical Care with a broad spectrum of physical health concerns and complexity which influence therapy delivery and needs, the successful post holder with have frequent opportunity to expand their knowledge base of critical illness pathology.

This role is based within Critical Care however the successful candidate would be expected to continue to work with patients once they have transitioned to an acute ward to continue their rehabilitation journey. This service runs a monthly follow up clinic to support patients understand, process and move forward with life after ITU in which the post holder would attend.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work alongside Physiotherapists, Therapy Support Workers and the wider critical care multi-disciplinary team providing patient centred rehabilitation, helping to optimise recovery through engagement in physical, cognitive and psychological therapies. In addition this will include supporting patients and their families with provision of advice and support with discharge planning when appropriate. This role operates as part of a 7 day service with weekend working on a pro-rata basis. Duties include:

  • To assess, diagnose, interpret and manage own specialist caseload of complex patients as an autonomous practitioner in accordance with Professional Code of Conduct and Health and Care Professions Council Regulations.
  • The post holder will work in close co-operation with colleagues within all Care Groups to deliver a cohesive service that is user led ensuring a consistently high standard of patient care that is safe and timely.
  • To work closely with Team Managers and senior therapists to ensure a robust structure of training, supervision and appraisal is delivered to all members within the team.
  • To act as a source of Specialist advice and support within the Therapy Centre and across the Trust and the wider health service.
  • Engage or lead on projects to develop services and learning opportunities for others including band 5's, assistant practitioners and students as well as celebrating learning and achievements with the wider therapy and MDT teams.

As part of this plan the Critical Care service will be relocated and based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in a new and expanded purpose designed facility.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registered with Health and Care professional Council

Work experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of broad range of pre and post qualification experience
  • Evidence of experience in relevant areas of clinical practice including rehabilitation
  • Evidence of teaching/student experience
  • Previous experience of working within the NHS as a registered OT
  • Evidence of working collaboratively within therapy sessions to achieve multiple therapeutic aims inline with Patient centred holistic therapy goals
Desirable criteria
  • Participated in audit and research
  • Previous experience working as an OT with neurological presentations
  • Previous experience delivering cognitive therapy interventions

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of CPD detailing clinical experience relevant to the post
  • Evidence of specialist level of clinical reasoning

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to develop leadership ability
