Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated Band 5 Orthopaedic Plaster Technician with the BOA Casting Certificate, to work as part of the Fracture Clinic team at the Royal Surrey Hospital.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Multidisciplinary Team to provide high quality and cost effective patient focused services. They will be responsible for assessing individual patient care needs, implementing and evaluating plans of care in accordance with agreed policies and professional guidelines. They will also be responsible for providing a plastering service for the Orthopaedic wards, fracture clinics and the Emergency department.
You will consistently ensure that patient privacy, dignity and psychological well-being is maintained at all times. We require individuals with basic IT skills, who are forward thinking, well organised and have a positive attitude towards flexibility and change.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for assessing individual patient care needs and developing, implementing and evaluating high standards of evidence based care in accordance with agreed policies and professional guidelines.
To provide a casting/splinting service across a wide and varied patient group throughout the Trust and to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service.
• Work autonomously and is accountable for the care delivered and any omissions of care.
• Use specialist knowledge and skills to provide treatment to patients attending the Plaster Room and to assist with the development of new and current services.
• To work closely with Senior Nurses, Divisional Managers and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) to provide high quality and cost effective patient focused services.
• Participate in the delivery of formal and informal teaching for junior staff, students and Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner and act as a resource for education and development within the service.

Fracture Clinic is a diverse, multidisciplinary environment which requires flexible and adaptable skills, an aptitude to learn and a motivation to develop your own skills.
As an Orthopaedic Practitioner with a BOA Casting Certificate, the post holder will be responsible for providing a high quality patient focused service for trauma and orthopaedic patients by demonstrating expertise in a full range of casting techniques and brace/splint applications to both adult and paediatric patients across the Trust.

Essential criteria
- British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) British Casting Certificate
- Active on BOA register
- Ongoing personal/professional development
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- 12 months post qualification
- Recent clinical experience working in the Plaster Room in an acute Trust
- Secure knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology and fracture managment
- Knowledge of the principles of casting and splinting techniques, application of appliances and the complications of these
- Evidence of recent clinical skill and competency with a variety of casting materials
- Evidence of clinical skill and competency in undertaking a variety of casting and splinting procedures
- Sound knowledge and clinical skills regarding wound care, removal of sutures/slips and pin site care
