Job overview
We are looking to recruit motivated, caring, compassionate individuals for the role of Apprentice Healthcare Support Workers.
The Apprenticeship programme offers a full time 18 months fixed term contract which in most cases leads to a permanent position with Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.
Applicants must be aged 18 or over on date of starting and have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to enrolment.
Have a genuine interest in caring for people and be able to demonstrate this within the application.
You MUST NOT hold a degree, level four qualification or above in a health-related subject.
You must not have significant Healthcare Experience
You will be required to undertake
Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship
Care Certificate
BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Care
Candidates must also hold English and Maths GCSE at grades 9 – 1 / A*- G or equivalent and be able to demonstrate these qualifications at interview by presenting valid certificates. With out formal proof you will not be eligible to commence the apprenticeship.
You will benefit from a comprehensive training programme with support in the workplace from the Vocational Trainers which will enhance your knowledge.
We are recruiting to 2 Cohorts planned to start in September and November 2025.
If successful at shortlisting, you'll be invited to selection event on Saturday 7th June 2025 and must be prepared to stay all day at this event.
Main duties of the job
Please be aware that you could be allocated to Calderdale Royal Hospital or Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. If you have a particular preference, please notify us at interview.
You must have the ability to work under pressure.
You will need to possess excellent communication skills and must have a genuine interest in caring for people.
You will be required to work in Clinical areas as a member of the team to deliver care to patients in your care.
There is an eligibility criterion for government funded apprenticeships schemes that applies and therefore applicants must be aged 18 or over and have been resident in the UK/EU for the last three years. You MUST NOT hold a degree, level four qualification or above in a health-related subject.
Working for our organisation
We employ more than 6,500 staff who deliver compassionate care from our two main hospitals, Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary as well as in community sites, health centres and in patients’ homes. We also are incredibly proud to have almost 150 volunteers here at CHFT.
We provide a range of services including urgent and emergency care; medical; surgical; maternity; gynaecology; critical care; children’s and young people’s services; end of life care and outpatient and diagnostic imaging services.
We provide community health services, including sexual health services in Calderdale from Calderdale Royal and local health centres. These include Todmorden Health Centre and Broad Street Plaza.
We continue to modernise and invest in our health services to build on our strong reputation. Foundation trusts are public leaders in improving quality in health services. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will be required to provide care to patients, this will be variable depending on your workplace and will include:-
Personal cares,
Assist with Nutritional needs,
Monitor the Health and Well-Being of patients in your care
Assist and support with procedures as required
Effective communication with patients, visitors and staff
The shifts are rotational and will include Nights, Evenings, Weekends, Early shifts starting at 7am. There may be some departments which are regular Monday to Friday but these have limited availability.

Qualifications & Training
Essential criteria
- English GCSE grade 9 – 1 / A*-G (or equivalent academic qualifications)
- Maths GCSE grade 9 – 1 / A* - G (or equivalent academic qualifications)
- Must NOT hold a Level 4 Qualification or above in a health-related subject
- Committed to complete the Healthcare Support Worker Intermediate Apprenticeship
Knowledge, experience & expertise
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate a commitment to working in the caring profession
- Must have less than 12 months’ experience in a care setting
- A desire to make a difference to patient’s lives
- Evidence of kindness and compassion or caring on a personal or professional basis demonstrated within application
- Understand the importance of record keeping including the use of electronic systems such as nerve centre
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrates good English Skills in Application
Communication & Relationships
Essential criteria
- Ability to work as a team member
- Ability to work in a busy environment
- Good communication skills
- Able to work under direction
- MUST have lived in the UK for 3 years
