Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified Nuclear Medicine Radiographer or a Trainee to take a significant role in a busy Nuclear Medicine Department here at the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust.  The Department provides a wide ranging imaging, non-imaging and therapeutic radionuclide service based at the Royal Preston Hospital.  This busy department is equipped with two dual head SPECT/CT scanners (GE Discovery 870 DR). 

If you are a trainee Band 5 radiographer you must have a DCR/BSc Hons in Diagnostic Radiography and be HCPC registered. You must be willing to commit to training for a year and you would be appointed to a band 6 position on completion of the diploma and once fully competent.

The Department supports a progressive cardiac imaging service with Radiographer lead stressing.

You will hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Nuclear Medicine and have proven experience of an extensive range of Nuclear medicine procedures and demonstrable evidence of a high level of Hybrid Imaging knowledge.  

Suitably qualified radiographers with an interest in Nuclear Medicine and willing to undertake the Post Graduate Diploma in Nuclear Medicine will also be considered for a development role.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for carrying out the workload in the specific area of the department assigned, to ensure the timely delivery of an effective service.

You will monitor and maintain standards of professional practice, supervise more junior staff and deploy staff assuring standards are met.
Provide leadership and direction to the team, acting as a role model and patient advocate.

Assess, plan and make informed decisions on the required Imaging examinations providing advice and maintaining associated records.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are a small team that works closely across all roles to ensure a high quality service.

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Assist and support the Lead radiographer in the safe, effective management of the area including management of personnel, facilities and the associated systems and processes.
  • Be responsible for the delivery and coordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff.
  • Ensure a high radiographic standard is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of standards to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence based guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
  • Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Communicate with patients, relatives and other healthcare workers to ensure appropriate dissemination of complex information, in a form and manner consistent with their level of understanding, culture, background and preferred ways of communicating.
  • Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.
  • Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.
  • To participate in education and training of junior staff.
  • Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice.
  • Comply with the requirements of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 and IR (ME) R 2018 and related departmental protocols and procedures.

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria
  • • DCR/BSc Hons Diagnostic Radiography
  • • DRI/PgD Nuclear Medicine or commitment to undertake training
  • • HCPC registered
Desirable criteria
  • • Attendance at study days
  • • Demonstrates understanding of the service and suitable experience
  • • Certification in injection and cannulation

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Experience in a wide range of general nuclear medicine procedures
  • • Awareness of developments in Nuclear Medicine
  • • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of IRR 17 and IRMR18
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience in the use of CT
  • • Substantial relevant experience
  • Experience of audit
