An opportunity has arisen in the Microbiology department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary , part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Partnership, for a Band 5/6 Registered/Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the friendly, progressive, innovative team and play a part in the transformation of pathology services across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

The post holder will need to be State Registration through the Healthcare Professions Council.

The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Partnership fully integrates the pathology services delivered on behalf of the Partner Trusts within the Integrated Care System (ICS) footprint; Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The department processes a wide variety of clinical samples using both manual and automated methodology. The ideal candidates will have experience in all areas of general medical microbiology diagnostic testing. You will be expected to work in all aspects of general microbiology including microscopy, plate reading, antibiotic susceptibility testing, CL3 work, molecular microbiology, mycology, parasitology and serology. 

The ideal candidate will have had previous experience working in a clinical laboratory and will be expected to work towards and complete the IBMS Microbiology Specialist Portfolio if not already completed.

Candidates should possess well developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working. Being flexible, self-motivated and with good practical skills will be fundamental to the role.

An understanding of good laboratory practice and ISO15189 quality management is desirable.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate awareness and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards and to work towards promoting this to others.

The post holder will participate in the provision of a contractual, comprehensive 24/7 acute service and as such will be required to work on late shifts, weekend shifts and as the duty BMS on-call.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • IBMS accredited BSC in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent IBMS accredited top ups.
  • Registered with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Completion of IBMS post graduate registration portfolio or equivalent experience.
  • Commitment to complete the relevant Specialist BMS IBMS portfolio
  • Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory Training and required Laboratory competencies
  • (Band 6) IBMS Specialist Diploma in a relevant specialist subject
  • (Band 6) Commitment to continuous professional development required to maintain HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of continued CPD including relevant courses with regards to H&S, leadership, quality, or training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience with a range of laboratory techniques
  • (Band 6) Detailed understanding of job content
  • (Band 6) Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices
  • (Band 6) Discipline specific NHS experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory (Microbiology/Virology)
  • (Band 6) Multi – disciplinary awareness
  • (Band 6) Experience with a wide range of laboratory techniques in use across Blood sciences
  • (Band 6) Experience working within a laboratory providing local, regional, or national tertiary reference facilities
  • (Band 6) Experience in the implementation of new methodologies and /or equipment
  • (Band 6) Experience with the UKAS accreditation process
  • (Band 6) Experience in demonstrating leadership qualities

  • Experience in demonstrating leadership qualities
  • Discipline specific NHS laboratory experience
  • Multi – disciplinary awareness
