Job overview

The West Midlands Surgical Training Centre (WMSTC) is a surgical training facility specialising in human tissue and anatomical examination. The Surgical Training Centre Technician works within a small technical team that work together to plan and prepare for Surgical Educational events. 

The post will contribute to the day-to-day operations of the WMSTC, assisting in a broad range of technical work activities ensuring the provision of an efficient service that is in accordance with Trust, HTA and Department of Health regulations and requirements

Main duties of the job

  1. To assist in the completion of the day-to-day activities and duties of the Surgical Training Centre as required by the Trust, HTA, and the Department of Health.
  2. To provide technical support in a theatre environment.
  3. To prepare and set up cadaveric material for use in the training centre for visiting Surgeons and Medical Education courses and events.
  4. Uphold the dignity and respect of Human Tissue utilised within the West Midlands Surgical Training Centre.
  5. Maintain accurate cadaveric records adhering to HTA licensing requirements.
  6. Liaise with mortuary and funeral directors ensuring protocols are adhered to
  7. To ensure that the Surgical training Centre is organised and equipped for medical and surgical education.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures and Protocols are adhered within the Surgical Training Centre
  • Adhere to Trust policy, HTA licensing requirements, Department of Health regulations and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • To take responsibility for the disinfection, cleaning and general maintenance of the Training Centre and equipment.
  • To be responsible for all consumable ordering and check routine stock levels within the centre and to manage the storage area.
  • Arranging for specimens received for medical education to be received, stored, handled and disposed of appropriately.
  • Ensure the plastinated prosections housed within the Centre are stored securely, safely and appropriately in accordance with HTA and Department of Health standards.
  • To ensure all users/visitors to the centre abide by Standard Operating Procedures and codes of conduct.
  • To participate in evening and weekend work as and when the service requires.
